2007 E60 M5
In 2007, BMW has already updated the E60 M5 with a conventional six-speed manual transmission. Although this feature is exclusive to the North American models, since the seven-speed SMG III electro-hydraulic manual still remains the standard, the updated version proved to be popular.
BMW has not released any acceleration figures for cars equipped with the new gear box but it is unlikely to improve on the numbers of the SMG version. The new E60 M5’s 0-60mph dash, now takes just 4.1 seconds, while its top speed is electronically controlled to 155mph. Removing the limiter would make the car reach in excess of 206mph.
The car’s auxiliary features were further enhanced in the 2007 models. First to be installed as standard equipment was an auxiliary audio input for an iPod or MP3 player, a tire-pressure monitor and a real time traffic information feature. The 500HP/ 5 L/ V10 engine remained relatively unchanged with the new gear box letting drivers rev openly to the 8250 rpm redline. Programs for safety and stability also stayed the same together with the BMW’s M Dynamic Mode stability system.

However, new options were introduced that include a high-definition radio and night vision system with a thermal-imaging camera to constantly monitors the road ahead. It also displays images according to their temperature on the iDrive screen. The iDrive computer system that is used to control most secondary vehicle systems consists of an iDrive’s user interface. It has an LCD panel mounted in the dashboard and a controller knob on the center console. The iDrive conveniently lets the driver, front-seat passenger and recently, the back-seat passengers to control the seat air conditioner and heater, radio and CD player, navigation and communication system. This is a technological upgrade that is designed for added comfort.
The 2007 Sports package also includes a 3-spoke sport steering wheel and 20-way multi-contour seats. In addition, the new M5 Touring was also made available in 2007. Powered by the same normally aspirated 5L V 10 cylinder engine and without the 155 mph electronic limiter, this new M5 touring is capable of a speed of 200mph even when transporting sizeable loads. Equipped with BMW’s unique seven-speed Sequential Manual Gear Box, the new M5 touring offers up to 1,650 liters of boot space for people who needs to move cargos really quick.
As always, the new M5 touring is faithful to the BMW M’s tradition of high performance hidden in the body of a standard car. One can only get a glimpse of discreet styling enrichments that highlight the potential under the hood of the car. Music aficionados can also specify the BMW Individual High End audio system that uses an amazing 16 loud speakers that produces an astounding 825 watts.
And for the third time in three years, the E60 M5’s S85B50 engine won the Best Performance Engine and the Best Above 4.0 Liter awards in the 2007 International Engine of the Year Awards. This is surely a feat that is awe inspiring.
