2006 E60 M5

When the BMW E60 M5 was initially launched, a lot of people were impressed with its awesome 5 liter V10 engine and advanced 7-speed SMG-III computerized clutch gearbox. However, the SMG-III gear box later received mixed reviews. Aside from the old guards who enjoy the feel of a manual transmission, some car experts further observed that the shifting is much too technical for some driver’s convenience.

In 2006, BMW North America came up with an E60 M5 that is equipped with a manual transmission at a no cost option. The manual box is 6-speed and is one cog less than SMG-III’s 7 ratios. The manual model also removes the ability to fully disengage the car’s DSC stability control. Instead, it has an M Dynamic Mode, which turns off most of DSC’s features that is similar to the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) on the BMW X5.

The 2006 BMW 5-Series also comes in two new 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engines with Valvetronic variable valve lift and a magnesium/aluminum composite construction. It features a new electronically controlled engine cooling that is matched with an electric coolant pump. The 525i and 525xi are powered by a 215-horsepower 3.0-liter engine, while the 530i and 530xi 3.0-liter engines have a three-stage induction system producing 255 horsepower. Two new all-wheel-drive versions are also added to these 2006 525xi and the 530xi models. It is also available in an M-Sports package.

With its distinct exterior and trade mark fender gills, the vehicle easily stands out. Although its exterior also received mixed reviews, the car’s interior is trimmed in unmistakable luxury. Everything inside the car feels like solid steel. The switch gear makes a smooth tick when operated while the glove box and center console glides gently when you open them. Even the cup holder reeks with opulence. Soft and supple characterizes the leather of the car seats.

One of the wonders about this car is that it does not have the feel of a 4000 sedan especially when taking corners. With great balance, grip and feedback, it has very little body roll and almost no dive under braking. As you drive, you can feel the grip from every corner and judge exactly how far you can push the chassis and reel it back at the perfect time. The car also drops speed very well considering its weight and tires.

In short, the power is awe-inspiring, the handling is remarkable, the ride is easy and the interior is luxurious. It did not come as a big surprise then, when the S85B50 engine of the E60 M5 won several International Engine of the Year awards in 2006. Bagging the International Engine of the year, Best performance Engine and Best Above 4.0 Liter awards for two consecutive years is an obvious affirmation of the car’s exemplary performance.

With the production of E60 M5 models with a six speed/manual/optional transmission, the third generation 7 speed SMG standard was born. Like its predecessors, it has lived up to the BMW tradition.
